A guide for staff and students using Windows 11 devices provided by ICT Services

This page explains how to use your school‑managed Windows 11 device. All laptops and desktops are preconfigured by ICT Services, including security, updates, Microsoft 365 apps, safeguarding tools, and internet filtering.

Who is this for?

All staff and students using school‑issued Windows 11 devices.


?️ Your School Device: What’s Already Set Up

Every device is fully prepared by ICT Services before it is issued. This includes:

Windows 11 Enterprise / Education

Modern layout, fast performance, improved security.

Microsoft 365 A3 Licence Assigned Automatically

  • Staff: M365 A3 Faculty
  • Students: M365 A3 Student

This gives access to:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • OneNote
  • Outlook
  • Teams
  • OneDrive
  • SharePoint
  • Forms
  • And other M365 services

All Microsoft 365 Apps Pre‑Installed

There is no need to install Office apps manually. Everything you need is ready to use on first login.


? Signing Into Your Device

  1. Turn on your device
  2. Sign in with your school email address
    • Example: firstname.lastname@taw.org.uk
  3. Complete MFA if prompted
  4. Windows will load your apps, settings, and OneDrive automatically

You must sign in with your school account for everything to work properly.


?️ Where Your Files Are Stored

OneDrive – Automatic Cloud Storage

Your Documents, Desktop, and Pictures folders may automatically back up to OneDrive depending on Intune policy.

OneDrive allows:

  • Access to your files from any school device
  • File recovery if a laptop is damaged
  • Automatic syncing
  • Safe storage protected by school security policies

You will see:
OneDrive –  in File Explorer.


? Security & Safety on Your Device

All school devices are protected and monitored as required for safeguarding and security.


?️ Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Built In)

All devices are centrally protected by:

  • Real‑time virus protection
  • Threat detection
  • Automated scans
  • Zero‑day protection
  • Anti‑malware and anti‑ransomware layers

No additional antivirus is needed.


? Lightspeed Internet Filtering

All browsing is filtered by Lightspeed to ensure:

  • Safe internet use
  • Age‑appropriate access
  • Protection from harmful or inappropriate content

Filtering applies on school devices whether on-site or at home (depending on policy).


?️ Senso Safeguarding Monitoring

Senso provides:

  • Keyword monitoring
  • Behaviour alerts
  • Safeguarding flagging
  • Screen monitoring for lessons (if enabled for teachers)

This helps ensure student safety and compliance with safeguarding policies.


? Using Apps on Your Device

✔ Pre‑installed apps include:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • OneNote
  • Teams
  • Outlook
  • OneDrive
  • Edge (default browser)

✔ Additional apps via Company Portal

ICT-approved apps (e.g., Canva, Adobe Reader) can be installed via Company Portal.


? Updates & Maintenance

All updates are handled automatically through Intune:

  • Windows updates
  • Security patches
  • App updates
  • Driver updates

You do not need to install or approve updates — it all happens silently in the background.

Just ensure:

  • Your device is connected to the internet
  • It is restarted semi-regularly

? What You Cannot Do

The following actions are restricted for safety and stability:

  • Install unapproved software
  • Disable antivirus
  • Change filtering settings
  • Modify system settings
  • Access admin tools
  • Add personal accounts to M365 apps

If you need software that isn’t available in Company Portal, contact ICT.


?️ Troubleshooting Tips

✔ My apps aren’t appearing yet

Restart the device — Intune may still be applying settings.

✔ Teams/Outlook isn’t signing in

  • Make sure you are signed into Windows with your school account
  • Check internet connection
  • Restart the app
